This is a topic that cannot be overstated. No matter who you are or where you are in life, the power of your words—and what you choose to speak over yourself—matters more than you may realize. What you feed your mind and speak with your mouth significantly shapes your life.
As Proverbs 23:7 says, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
And Luke 6:45 reminds us, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”
But how is the heart filled?
It’s filled with the thoughts you dwell on and the words you speak.

Even if someone fully believes in the importance of speaking life, the challenge often lies in the small areas. It’s easy to overlook idle, false, or negative phrases that seem harmless, especially when used in a joking way. But these words can still plant seeds—seeds that eventually grow into beliefs.
Phrases like:
- “I’m dead.”
- “I’m dying.”
- “This is killing me.”
- “I’m not good enough.”
- “I’ve always been an idiot.”
- “I’m such an idiot.”
- “What’s wrong with me?”
- “I’ll never be able to ____.”
These may seem like casual expressions, but Proverbs 18:21 says,
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Words are not just noise. Even in jest, they carry meaning, influence the heart, and shape reality. Whether people realize it or not, the consistent use of negative, death-related, or self-deprecating phrases can dull the sensitivity to truth, hope, and life.
The Better Way: Speak Truth
It’s important to ask the Holy Spirit to help identify any areas where your speech may not line up with God’s Word. When you invite Him into your thought life and the words you speak—even the small ones—He reveals truth and brings lasting transformation.
This doesn’t mean perfection is expected. There’s no condemnation. Renewing the mind is a process, and transformation happens one day at a time. It’s not about guilt; it’s about awareness and progress. Let the Holy Spirit lead you in replacing negative or idle words with words of life.
Instead, Speak What God Says About You:
- “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)
- “I have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:16)
- “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13)
- “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.” (Hebrews 13:6)
- “God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
Use Philippians 4:8 as a filter for your thoughts and words:
“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Make it a habit to pray Psalm 141:3 daily:
“Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.”
Start With the Source of Life
If you’re reading this and don’t know Jesus personally, know this: the first step in speaking life is knowing the Author of Life—Jesus Christ. The Bible says in Romans 10:9:
“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
You can receive Him today. Here’s a prayer you can say out loud—sincerely and from the heart:
“Dear Lord Jesus, come into my heart. Forgive me of all my sins. I believe that You rose from the dead and that You’re coming back again for me. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and empower me to live a transformed life for You. Thank You for changing me from the inside out!”
